Born in 22 May 1929, in Kavala, Greece. Studied oboe and piano, and composition with Paul Ben-Haim (in Israel), Aaron Copland (at Tanglewood, USA) and Luigi Nono (in Italy). Holds a degree from New-York University and Master of Music degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. He was awarded the Morse Fellowship in Composition by the University of Cincinnati. Ben-Yohanan was the head of the Music Department at the Thelma Yallin Music & Art School in Tel-Aviv, Israel (1964-1987); Professor of Music, Department of Music, Bar-Ilan University, Israel (1973-1996). Has been chairman of the Israel Composers' League (1989-92). Composed works for symphony orchestra, chamber ensembes, solo instruments, vocal works, etc. His music has been performed in Israel, the United States, South America, Europe and Hong-Kong – several of them won prizes or were commissioned. Publications: Music in Israel – a Short Survey (1975); Music Notation (1983).
