A Voice is Calling (Kol Koreh)
for horn
Kol Koreh is one of a series of compositions written by Joachim Stutschewsky for solo wind instruments. The name of the work means "A Voice is Calling" and brings into mind the biblical "Voice in the Wilderness". The piece was composed in 1965 and first performed in February 1966 at the AMLI Central Music Library, Tel Aviv, by Wolfgang Lewy. The composer revised the work in 1968 and it is here published in its new, revised form. The entire composition is based on the melodic material of the four opening bars and their rhythmical shape. It develops in what the composer terms a "free tonality"; the melodic progressions are freely chromatic but not dodecaphonically organised. Stutschewsky's music is always highly expressive and its fast movements assumes a motoric and dynamic character. "Kol Koreh" concludes on a calm elaboration of the theme that opens the composition.
